History of EASEC

    The Eleventh East Asia-Pacific Conference on Structural Engineering and Construction (EASEC) was founded by Professor Fumio Nishino, then the Vice President for Academic Affairs of the Bangkok-based Asian Institute of Technology. The objective of the Conference was to provide forum for professional structural and construction engineers and researchers working in Asia and the Pacific region to present recent progress in research and development, and to discuss the implementation of new tools and technology in professional applications. In particular, the conference intends to promote mutual understanding and share common ideas. EASEC has been held regularly since 1986.

• The First EASEC was organized in Bangkok during January 15-17, 1986.
• The Second EASEC meeting was held in Chiang Mai, Thailand from January 11-13,1989.
• The Third EASEC conference was successfully completed in Shanghai, China during April 23-26 1991.
• The Fourth East Asia-Pacific Conference on Structural Engineering and Construction (EASEC-4) was held during September 20-22, 1993, in Seoul, Korea.
• EASEC-5 was hosted by the Griffith University Gold Coast Campus, Australia in July 25-27, 1995.
• EASEC-6 was held in January 14-16, 1998 in Taipei, Taiwan.
• EASEC-7 was held in Kochi, Japan in August 27-29, 1999.
• EASEC-8 was held in Singapore in December 5-7, 2001.
• EASEC-9 was held in Bali, Indonesia in December 16-18, 2003.
• EASEC-10 held to mark the 20 years anniversary of EASEC in August 3-5, 2006 in Bangkok.

    The international control of EASEC is under the EASEC international steering committee. Fumio Nishino of the University of Tokyo, Japan, had acted as the founding chairman of the international steering committee from the formation of EASEC until EASEC-4. Prof. P. Karasudhi of Asian Institute of Technology; Thailand, was appointed as the next chairman during EASEC-4. He was succeeded by Prof. H. Okamura of the University of Tokyo. The current chairman, Prof. W. Kanok-Nukulchai of Asian Institute of Technology was appointed during the EASEC-8.

Scopes

• To institute, encourage, advise upon the advance the standards and methods of education and training at all levels in the fields of structural engineering and construction.
• To encourage original work and research associated with structural engineering and construction, including methods of education and training related there to, having regard to the interests and needs of the industry in the East Asia-Pacific region.
• To promote the dissemination and transfer of knowledge and new technology of all areas in structural engineering and construction among members by encouraging public meetings, exhibitions and discussions, public lectures, and publication of papers presented in EASEC conferences.
• To take necessary and proper steps to co-operate with the industry, governmental departments or statutory boards, educational establishments and other essential bodies in the region.

Geographic Coverage

    Initially, the geographic focus of EASEC covers all countries in East Asia, Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, as well as Hawaii and the West Coasts of USA and Canada. However, participation in the conference shall be open worldwide.
